We're not sure when cricket first came to Chitterne but there are reports of matches as early as the 1880s and photographs from the 1920s and 1950s. However, Chitterne Cricket Club in its current form was set up in 2001 and has played pretty continuously since.
In this time, the playing field has developed as a ground, and whilst it has slightly more slope than Lords, and is occasionally slightly soggy, it provides a very picturesque backdrop for social cricket. Unsurprisingly tea is as important as the game, and the club has probably got a better reputation for the former.
We endeavour to play about 10 matches a season depending on the weather and the season usually starts in late April with a friendly intra- club loosener.
FIXTURES
All fixtures are at home unless stated otherwise.
All fixtures start at 2pm unless stated otherwise.
New players of any age, gender or skill level are always welcome. The objective is to play cricket in an enjoyable and supportive environment in order to encourage the maximum participation. Occasionally we will run net sessions with some coaching support. We have an all-weather net and bowling machine available for all members to use.
Non-players are especially welcome either as spectators, or volunteers. There is plenty of work to do to deliver the quality of tea the club has become known for, but also to prepare the ground and maintain the equipment.
Membership is exceedingly reasonable. Last years subscriptions were £15 for a single player, £20 for a family, and £10 for a social member. These are preferably paid online via BACS (Chitterne Cricket Club, SC:309950, AC: 18075663)
